houston mural adventure, part two
It has finally happened. I was just commenting last week to a friend that in nine weeks of travel back and forth to Boston, I had yet to experience a single significant flight delay. Alas, it is now the end of week ten, and my flight back to Houston has been delayed by four hours. I am not particularly superstitious, but I feel like this is partially my fault.
I am currently sitting at the airport version of some apparently famous Boston restaurant, drinking extremely overpriced Yuengling and contemplating the best way to spend this newfound time.
I've settled on "Houston Mural Update," or part two of the unfortunately named "Liz's Guide to Murals and Other Fun Places to Take Pictures for Social Media in Houston." I promised I would work on a snappier title. I lied.
After a few more drinks I may even consider revisiting that weirdly emotional softball related post that I drafted last week. Time will tell.
Houston Murals, Part Two!
Y'ALL. SOME ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC NEW MURALS HAVE JUST APPEARED DOWNTOWN. Most of the other #basic bloggers out there beat me to this, so this probably is not news to you. Having seen these on Instagram, I excitedly grabbed some friends and drove aimlessly around downtown, making an educated guess as to where they were located (admittedly, this was not a great plan). I'll make it easy on you - they're on the side of The Shops at Houston Center (aka the world's most depressing mall with a mediocre food court), at McKinney and Caroline. Look...I know one of these says "dream big" on it, which verges on "super lame inspirational quote" territory for me...but the way the text is inverted and the paint is dripping from the letters almost makes it look ironic and self-aware...I'm sorry I am in no way qualified to criticize or comment on anything resembling art; I am an accountant. I will stick to Instagram photos and lighthearted commentary. This commentary has been particularly pointless; let's get to the photos.
THEY CHANGED THE ASTROS MURAL
You know that awesome mural in "home run alley" (the Conoco pump side) in Minute Maid Park!?! (It's my Instagram profile pic...I guess I need to change it now.) Last week, a new mural appeared in its place, and it is somehow just as great as, if not even better than, the old one! I don't know how this appeared so quickly. Did they just paint over the old one and finish it in like, four days? Did they build some kind of fake wall and just replace the entire wall!? No...that's absurd. That's Yuengling number three talking. It doesn't matter. It's fantastic, and I am so excited. Getting a picture that didn't have 23948723 people in front of it was difficult; apparently EVERYONE is trying to get the perfect Insta with this mural. Hey...I get it.
I'm sure many more murals/random "art" installations have appeared around Houston (including the inexplicable "vandalism" of the "BE SOMEONE" bridge, which now says something about Houston legend Mattress Mac...) since my last mural post, but these are the most notable. Now go take some pics and keep Houston #basic!
